Jindal Stainless and AB Energia Announce Odisha’s Largest Captive Solar Plant, Pioneering a New Era of Industrial Sustainability

Taking a major stride towards a greener future, Jindal Stainless, India’s largest stainless steel manufacturer, has commissioned Odisha’s largest captive solar power plant at its Jajpur manufacturing unit in collaboration with leading clean energy provider AB Energia Solutions Pvt. Ltd.

The newly commissioned plant, with an impressive cumulative capacity of over 30 MWp, is designed to generate approximately 44.3 million units of green electricity annually — enough to power 12,000 to 15,000 households. The project not only bolsters the plant’s energy self-sufficiency but also significantly slashes its carbon footprint by an estimated 32,208 metric tonnes of CO₂ each year.

The innovative solar infrastructure comprises two groundbreaking installations: a 7.324 MWp floating solar array set atop an internal reservoir, and a 23.02 MWp rooftop solar system spanning ten industrial rooftops at various elevations. By transforming previously idle water bodies into clean energy hubs and utilising underused roof spaces, the project maximises renewable output while conserving land and reducing water evaporation.

Managing Director, Jindal Stainless, Mr Abhyuday Jindal said, “At Jindal Stainless, we’re accelerating our progress towards achieving our Net Zero goals and investing in sustainable infrastructure through strategic partnerships. The commissioning of Odisha’s largest captive solar energy plant at our Jajpur facility is a major leap in this journey. We are redefining the future of stainless steel manufacturing in India by integrating innovative renewable energy solutions and staying accountable to global sustainability standards.”

Echoing this sentiment, Mr. Siddharth Bhatia, Managing Director of AB Energia Solutions, added, “Delivering this landmark project at Jindal Stainless’ Jajpur facility exemplifies AB Energia’s commitment to pioneering sustainable energy solutions. By transforming unused water bodies into productive assets and optimizing rooftop spaces, we are setting new benchmarks for green innovation in India’s industrial sector. By enabling a transition away from fossil fuels and toward renewable sources, projects like this not only drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also enhance operational efficiency, cost stability, and long-term competitiveness for industrial players. As demand for low-carbon ‘green steel’ rises globally, such initiatives position Indian industry at the forefront of sustainable manufacturing, ensuring resilience and relevance in a rapidly evolving market landscape”

The project is a major milestone not just for Jindal Stainless but for the broader Indian manufacturing sector, which is increasingly looking to decarbonise. AB Energia, known for its expertise in customised renewable energy solutions—including floating, rooftop, carport, and ground-mounted solar systems—continues to push the envelope in India’s race towards achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

Backed by an investment plan of INR 700 crore over the next five years into various decarbonisation initiatives, Jindal Stainless is aggressively working towards its goal of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.

This partnership between Jindal Stainless and AB Energia signals a new era for industrial sustainability in India, setting a high benchmark for others to follow.
