India’s First Made-in-India C-295 Nears Flight Trials, Strengthening Aerospace Manufacturing Ecosystem

India’s aerospace and defence manufacturing ambitions have achieved a major milestone as the first domestically assembled Airbus C-295 military transport aircraft is now ready for flight trials at the Tata-Airbus final assembly line in Vadodara, Gujarat. The development marks a significant leap for the country’s “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives, while also opening new opportunities for advanced precision manufacturing, including aerospace-grade gear production and transmission technologies.

The aircraft was recently inspected by the Indian Air Force Deputy Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Awadhesh Kumar Bharti, at the Tata Advanced Systems-Airbus facility, underscoring the strategic importance of the programme for India’s future air mobility and defence preparedness.

The C-295 programme is part of India’s ₹21,935 crore agreement with Airbus Defence and Space for 56 transport aircraft. While 16 aircraft are being delivered in fly-away condition from Spain, the remaining 40 aircraft will be manufactured in India at the Vadodara facility. According to Tata Advanced Systems, the programme involves more than 85% structural and final assembly work within India, alongside the manufacturing of approximately 13,000 detailed parts through an expanding domestic supply chain.

For India’s manufacturing sector, the project represents far more than aircraft assembly. It is rapidly creating a high-value aerospace ecosystem involving machining, forgings, precision tooling, bearings, motion systems, actuation technologies, and high-accuracy gear manufacturing. Aerospace platforms such as the C-295 require highly reliable geared systems across engine accessories, flap actuation, cargo handling mechanisms, landing systems, and auxiliary drive assemblies, driving demand for ultra-precision gear cutting, grinding, inspection, and heat treatment capabilities.

The programme is also accelerating the adoption of aerospace-grade manufacturing standards among Indian suppliers. Tata Advanced Systems noted that 37 Indian suppliers, including several MSMEs, have already been onboarded for the programme, with multiple special aerospace processes receiving certification.

Industry observers believe the C-295 initiative could become a turning point for India’s private-sector-led aerospace manufacturing, similar to how automotive localisation transformed the country’s engineering landscape decades ago. The final assembly line in Vadodara integrates detailed part manufacturing, tooling, sub-assemblies, jigs, and testing infrastructure, creating long-term opportunities for precision engineering companies serving aerospace and defence applications.

From a gear manufacturing perspective, the aerospace sector demands some of the industry’s most advanced capabilities, including micron-level accuracy, lightweight transmission solutions, advanced metallurgy, and stringent quality traceability. As India deepens its indigenous aerospace manufacturing capabilities, domestic gear manufacturers are expected to increasingly align with aerospace-grade production technologies such as high-precision gear grinding, special coatings, advanced heat treatment, and digital inspection systems.

The C-295 programme also reflects the growing convergence between defence manufacturing and smart industrial production. With aerospace OEMs increasingly demanding zero-defect manufacturing, traceability, and automated quality control, the initiative is expected to stimulate investments in Industry 4.0-enabled machining and gear production technologies across the Indian supply chain.

As India prepares the first domestically assembled C-295 for flight testing, the programme stands as a powerful example of how defence manufacturing is not only strengthening national security but also driving the evolution of India’s high-precision engineering and gear manufacturing ecosystem.
