Infrastructure giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has announced that it has bagged a significant order worth between ₹1,000 crore and ₹2,500 crore from JSW Energy for the execution of the Bhavali Pumped Storage Project (PSP) in Maharashtra.
The order, awarded to L&T’s Heavy Civil Infrastructure division, marks a significant milestone in India’s growing commitment to renewable energy integration and grid stability. According to L&T’s regulatory filing, the Bhavali PSP is strategically located across the Nashik and Thane districts and is designed with a total installed capacity of 1,500 megawatts (MW), comprising several smaller generating units.
The comprehensive scope of the project encompasses all civil works, ranging from the construction of access roads and both upper and lower reservoirs to the complete water conductor system, pressure tunnels, and an underground powerhouse unit.
Pumped storage projects like Bhavali PSP play a vital role in stabilising the power grid, particularly as India ramps up its adoption of renewable energy sources, for example, solar and wind, which are inherently variable in nature. These storage systems help balance supply and demand by storing excess energy during low-demand periods and releasing it when demand peaks.
This order further cements L&T’s position as a leader in complex infrastructure solutions and underscores the growing demand for advanced energy storage systems in India’s evolving power landscape.
