In a strategic leap toward advancing India’s e-mobility sector, ZF Group, a global leader in driveline and chassis technology, has announced the start of production (SOP) for its Electric Park Brake (EPB) system in India. The system debuts on a newly launched all-electric vehicle developed by a leading Indian automotive manufacturer, marking a significant milestone for ZF’s localisation and innovation roadmap. ET
This marks ZF’s first-ever EPB production for a passenger vehicle in India, reinforcing the company’s commitment to supporting India’s transition toward electrification and safer mobility solutions. Developed under ZF’s “Make in India for India and the World” strategy, the locally manufactured EPB showcases the company’s ability to tailor cutting-edge technologies to regional market needs.
The EPB replaces the traditional mechanical handbrake with a state-of-the-art electronically controlled system. Known for its low drag and reduced NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) characteristics, the EPB not only enhances fuel economy but also enables advanced driver-assistance functionalities.
Key features include:
“This isn’t just about parking,” emphasised ZF engineers. The EPB integrates fully into the braking system, offering both convenience and safety. With modular architecture, the system can scale across multiple vehicle platforms—from compact cars to light trucks—allowing OEMs to innovate without compromising performance or design flexibility.
Akash Passey, President of ZF Group in India, remarked:
“The SOP of ZF’s first Electric Park Brake in India, on a product like the all-new EV car platform, embodies ZF’s commitment to offer leading mobility solutions for local requirements. With advanced systems like the EPB, we are not only enhancing vehicle safety and performance but also supporting Indian automakers in delivering world-class and safe products for Indian consumers.”
As one of the global pioneers in brake technology, ZF has already delivered over 250 million EPB callipers worldwide. Its EPB solution is part of a broader suite of electronically controlled systems, supporting the industry’s shift toward software-defined vehicles and next-gen architecture.
With the Indian EV market poised for exponential growth, ZF’s local production of the EPB system is a strategic move to deepen its footprint in India, bridging global innovation with domestic manufacturing excellence.
