Seco Launches Digital Tool to Drive Sustainability Across Global Production Units

Seco, a global leader in metal cutting solutions, has announced the development of a digital Industrial Sustainability Assessment Tool designed to help its production units worldwide accelerate progress toward ambitious environmental and social sustainability goals.

With nearly 100 years of manufacturing expertise, Seco is embedding sustainability at the core of its value chain. The company has committed to achieving 90% circular waste by 2030, Net-Zero operations by 2035, reducing its environmental footprint, and ensuring a safe, inclusive workplace across all sites.

A Practical Tool for Local Sites

While Seco’s global sustainability strategy sets bold targets, translating them into actionable steps at the local level can be challenging. To bridge this gap, the Industrial Sustainability Assessment was conceived in 2021 as a framework enabling sites to measure their sustainability maturity and identify improvement priorities.

The tool defines six progressive levels, starting from legal compliance (Level 1) through to best practices and long-term goals (Level 6). It evaluates performance across four key areas:

  • People & Communities: Health & Safety, Diversity & Inclusion, Employee Wellbeing, and Community Engagement.
  • Climate, Biodiversity & Circularity: Resources, Emissions, and Waste Management.
  • Site-Specific: Integration of sustainability in operations, infrastructure, and development.
  • Suppliers: Local supplier responsibility and sustainable sourcing practices.

From Excel to Digital Innovation

Initially piloted in Sweden and the Netherlands, the tool was rolled out in Excel in 2023. However, user feedback highlighted the need for a more streamlined experience. In response, Seco digitized the assessment within its MyPages platform, making it mobile-friendly, intuitive, and capable of generating site-specific action plans.

Since 2024, the tool has enabled production units to:

  • Understand their current sustainability performance.
  • Prioritize areas for improvement.
  • Track progress over time.
  • Share best practices across regions.

Looking Ahead – Extending Beyond Seco

Building on its success internally, Seco is now exploring an externally adapted version of the tool for stakeholders and customers who may benefit from a structured sustainability assessment approach.

“Our ambition is to make manufacturing not just faster and easier, but truly sustainable across the value chain. This tool empowers every site to translate global strategy into practical, impactful action,” said Adrian Cox, Head of Global Quality Assurance.
