Driving India’s Naval Edge: Elecon Engineering.Powers INS Taragiri

In a significant boost to India’s maritime capabilities, the Indian Navy commissioned its latest stealth frigate, INS Taragiri, at Visakhapatnam on April 3,  in the presence of Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh. The warship is the fourth platform under the advanced P-17A guided-missile frigate programme, representing a new generation of indigenous naval engineering and combat readiness.

Designed by the Warship Design Bureau and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, INS Taragiri showcases cutting-edge stealth features, significantly reducing radar signatures and enhancing survivability in high-threat environments. With a displacement of approximately 6,670 tonnes and over 75% indigenous content, the vessel stands as a testament to India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing and strong collaboration between public and private sectors, including MSMEs.

At the heart of the frigate’s propulsion lies a highly complex and advanced gearbox system manufactured by Elecon Engineering Co. Ltd.. These precision-engineered gearboxes play a critical role in enabling the seamless movement of P-17A guided-missile frigates, ensuring efficient power transmission and operational reliability across demanding naval missions.

Elecon’s contribution highlights its longstanding expertise in transmission solutions and reinforces its role in powering India’s strategic defence assets. As modern naval platforms demand higher efficiency, reduced noise, and enhanced durability, such advanced gearbox systems form a crucial backbone of next-generation warship performance.

The commissioning of INS Taragiri not only strengthens the Indian Navy’s operational fleet but also underscores the nation’s commitment to indigenisation, innovation, and technological excellence in defence manufacturing.
