DRDO Develops Indigenous High-Pressure Compressor Drums, Boosting India’s Aerospace Self-Reliance

In a historic achievement for India’s aerospace sector, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully developed indigenous high-pressure compressor (HPC) drums for aero engines. This development marks a significant step toward reducing India’s dependence on foreign suppliers for critical aerospace components while reinforcing the nation’s defence manufacturing self-reliance.

HPC drums are essential components of aero engines, engineered to endure intense operational stress and high temperatures. Regular replacement is critical to maintaining peak engine performance and safety. Historically, India has relied on international suppliers for these high-cost parts.

The DRDO’s Materials Research Laboratory (DMRL) spearheaded the initiative to develop the indigenous technology for HPC drum manufacturing. Through the integration of advanced scientific techniques and knowledge-based tools, DMRL created a forging process capable of producing compressor drums that meet the stringent requirements of modern aero engines.

This advancement extends beyond just HPC drums. The adaptable technology developed by DMRL can be applied to manufacturing other crucial aero-engine components. Compressor discs produced using this method have successfully undergone all required tests and certifications, including assessments by the Indian Air Force.

The success of this initiative was the result of a collaborative effort involving multiple key organizations, including Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI), the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC), and the Directorate General of Quality Assurance (DGAQA).

The indigenous development of HPC drums represents a major advancement for India’s aerospace industry, demonstrating the country’s growing capabilities in producing critical components for advanced military aircraft. This accomplishment also highlights DRDO’s ongoing commitment to strengthening India’s self-reliance and technological prowess in defence manufacturing.
