ZF, a global leader in automotive technology, which has been honoured with the prestigious CLEPA Innovation Award in the ‘Green’ category for its groundbreaking electric motor that eliminates the use of rare earth materials. This innovative design not only ensures sustainability but also enhances the efficiency and resilience of supply chains.
“This award recognises our commitment to advancing environmentally friendly solutions for electromobility,” said Dr. Otmar Scharrer, Head of Engineering Electrified Powertrain Technology at ZF. “Our electric motor offers a sustainable alternative to conventional systems by eliminating rare earths while maintaining top-tier performance.”
Rare earth metals, that are commonly used in magnets and batteries, are difficult to extract and pose significant environmental concerns. ZF’s innovative I²SM (In-Rotor Inductive-Excited Synchronous Machine) addresses these challenges by using an inductively excited system without permanent magnets. This magnet-free design reduces reliance on critical raw materials, offering a greener and more efficient alternative.
The absence of rare earths also minimises resource dependency in production and strengthens the resilience of supply chains. Furthermore, the motor’s design eliminates drag losses caused by permanent magnets, improving efficiency during high-speed highway travel.
This award marks another milestone in ZF’s history of innovation. In 2022, ZF received the CLEPA Innovation Award for its autonomous shuttle, and in 2020, for its eTrailer, a prototype truck trailer with integrated electric drive. ZF also secured the award in 2017 alongside WABCO for their Evasive Maneuver Assist system for commercial vehicles.
CLEPA, the European association representing automotive suppliers, annually honours cutting-edge advancements that drive sustainability and digital transformation in the industry. An international jury of experts selects winners in categories like ‘Green’ and ‘Digital’ from approximately 80 applications.
This year’s award ceremony was held on December 4 during CLEPA’s 65th-anniversary celebration at Autoworld in Brussels. The ‘Green’ category highlights innovations that contribute to climate-neutral mobility and sustainable practices.
ZF’s recognition reaffirms its commitment to leading the charge in sustainable electromobility, setting new benchmarks for innovation and environmental responsibility.
