Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, India: SW Greentech Limited, the commercial electric vehicle arm of JSW Group, has launched AMPSTAR, marking the Group’s entry into the electric commercial mobility segment in India. The new brand will design, manufacture and sell electric buses and trucks, supported by a full-stack mobility ecosystem covering charging infrastructure, operating solutions, financing and after-sales support.
AMPSTAR vehicles will be manufactured at JSW’s greenfield electric vehicle facility at AURIC, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. Spread across 90 acres, the integrated facility has an annual production capacity of 15,000 electric buses and trucks.
The manufacturing facility will feature India’s first pre-treatment and electro-deposition (PT-ED) process for bus manufacturing, along with an automated truck-cabin production line and an integrated battery ecosystem. The company said these technologies are intended to support manufacturing quality and scale for electric commercial vehicles.
AMPSTAR has been developed around the complete customer journey rather than the vehicle alone. Customers will be able to choose power configurations ranging from 150 kW to 500 kW, along with different ownership and operating models, including outright purchase, leasing and Battery as a Service (BaaS).
The company has developed the electric drivetrain in-house, including the base logic, software and algorithms. This approach is intended to allow AMPSTAR to customise vehicles according to specific customer requirements and operating conditions.
The vehicles will incorporate a double-cooling battery system and a high-strength monocoque chassis, with engineering focused on Indian climate and road conditions.
AMPSTAR’s electric bus portfolio will span 7-metre to 18-metre buses, targeting applications including staff transportation, city, intercity and school mobility.
On the truck side, the company will initially introduce a 55-tonne tractor-trailer, with plans to expand its portfolio to tippers and fixed-body dumpers in the coming months.
Speaking at the launch, Sajjan Jindal, Chairman, JSW Group, said the company’s entry into electric commercial mobility is aimed at reducing dependence on imported fuels while supporting domestic manufacturing and lower logistics costs.
Parth Jindal, JSW Group, said AMPSTAR was developed after consultations with customers and stakeholders, highlighting that barriers to electric commercial vehicle adoption extend beyond the vehicle itself. The company has therefore integrated vehicles, charging, financing, operating solutions and after-sales support into its offering.
Sumit Mittal, CEO, JSW Greentech Limited, said AMPSTAR vehicles are being designed and manufactured in India with an in-house drivetrain and software architecture. He added that the company intends to build a portfolio covering a broad range of commercial mobility applications.
With AMPSTAR, JSW Group is expanding its presence in electric mobility from passenger and energy-related initiatives into commercial transportation, with an initial focus on electric buses and heavy-duty trucks.
