ZF LIFETEC Integrates Occupant Sensing with Adaptive Airbag and Seat Belt Systems

Alfdorf, September 17, 2026: ZF LIFETEC is combining occupant monitoring with adaptive restraint technologies to create an integrated passive safety system that can adjust airbag and seat belt protection according to the occupant and crash situation.

The company’s approach brings together cameras, seat sensors and seat belt sensors to determine factors such as occupant position, weight, size and posture. Software algorithms then use this information to adapt restraint strategies, with the aim of providing more individualized protection while supporting current and future Euro NCAP requirements.

“The true value of in-cabin sensing lies not in data collection itself, but in the intelligent use of that data to improve occupant safety,” said Harald Lutz, Senior Vice President, Research & Development, ZF LIFETEC.

From Occupant Detection to Adaptive Protection

ZF LIFETEC’s integrated system is designed to connect occupant perception directly with passive safety functions. Sensor data is combined to build an understanding of the occupant situation, which can then influence the deployment strategy of airbags and seat belts.

The system incorporates adaptive airbag technologies, including variable venting and adaptive cushion size, along with advanced multi-stage load-limiting seat belt technologies. According to the company, the combination allows restraint strategies to be adjusted according to individual occupants and different crash scenarios.

“For passive safety, simply detecting a crash will no longer be sufficient in the future,” said Philipp Russ, Head of Occupant Monitoring at ZF LIFETEC. “It is equally important to understand who is occupying a seat, how that person is positioned, and which restraint strategy offers the highest level of protection.”

Supporting Evolving Euro NCAP Requirements

The development comes as vehicle safety assessments place greater emphasis on occupant detection and adaptive restraint systems. Functions such as occupant status monitoring, seat position and seat belt detection, automatic passenger airbag control and occupant size classification are gaining importance.

ZF LIFETEC is combining these sensing capabilities with adaptive restraint technologies, including Dual Contour Airbags and ACR.8 advanced seat belt systems. The company says this system-level approach can allow information such as occupant size and seating position to directly influence restraint strategies.

Production-Ready Technology to Be Demonstrated

ZF LIFETEC will demonstrate the integrated technology at InCabin Europe 2026, being held in Barcelona from September 22 to 24.

A demonstration vehicle will show how cameras, seat sensors and seat belt sensors work together to identify different occupant situations and how the resulting information can influence airbag and seat belt activation. The demonstration will cover the complete process from occupant detection to adaptive protection.

According to ZF LIFETEC, the showcased technologies are already production-ready and can make use of existing vehicle sensor ecosystems. The company sees the integration of sensing, software and passive safety technologies as an important step toward more adaptive occupant protection in future vehicle interiors.
