Mahindra Aerostructures Pvt. Ltd. (MASPL), part of the Mahindra Group, has secured a new contract from Airbus to manufacture and supply fuselage skins for the A320 family of aircraft, strengthening its role in Airbus’ global aerospace supply chain and expanding advanced aerostructure manufacturing capabilities in India.
Under the multi-year contract, Mahindra Aerostructures will manufacture fuselage skins for Sections 18 and 19, covering the rear fuselage and tail sections of the Airbus A320neo and A321XLR aircraft. The components will be produced at the company’s Bengaluru facility and supplied to Airbus’ manufacturing site in Augsburg, Germany.
The contract covers the manufacture of eight fuselage skins for Section 18 and three for Section 19. The programme, together with a recently concluded roll-forming contract from Airbus, is expected to support Mahindra Aerostructures’ strategy of developing capabilities to manufacture larger fuselage sections in the future.
“This marks another important step in our longstanding relationship with Airbus and further strengthens Mahindra Aerostructures’ role in the global aerospace supply chain,” said Vinod Sahay, President, Mahindra Aerospace, Advanced Technologies and Trucks & Buses. He added that the programme would require advanced process capabilities and precision at scale, supported by investments in specialised technologies and manufacturing infrastructure in India.
Advanced manufacturing capabilities
As part of the programme’s industrialisation roadmap, Mahindra Aerostructures plans to expand its specialised manufacturing infrastructure with advanced chemical milling, surface treatment and stretch-forming production lines.
Engineering activities are already underway and include tooling design, process-flow updates, qualification and inspection. Deliveries under the programme are targeted to begin in 2028.
Jürgen Westermeier, President and Managing Director, Airbus India and South Asia, said the contract demonstrates the precision engineering capabilities available in India and will contribute to strengthening the country’s position in Airbus’ global supply chain.
Expanding Airbus-Mahindra partnership
The latest contract builds on an expanding relationship between the two companies. Mahindra Aerostructures has previously secured contracts to manufacture and assemble the main fuselages of Airbus H125 and H130 helicopters, as well as supply components and sub-assemblies for Airbus commercial aircraft programmes.
The new programme further positions Mahindra Aerostructures’ Bengaluru facility as a manufacturing base for complex aerospace structures destined for Airbus’ global production network.
The company operates a large aerospace manufacturing facility near Bengaluru with capabilities spanning aerospace parts, sub-assemblies and aerostructures. Its certifications include AS9100D and six NADCAP certifications, along with various customer accreditations.
The contract is also aligned with India’s broader Make in India objectives, with the manufacture of increasingly complex aircraft structures in the country expected to deepen domestic aerospace manufacturing capabilities and integrate Indian suppliers further into global OEM supply chains.
