Reliance Industries, Rolls-Royce Announce Strategic Partnership for Indigenous AMCA Engine

Reliance Industries Limited (Reliance) and Rolls-Royce have announced their strategic intent to partner on the design, development, manufacturing and delivery of a sovereign indigenous combat engine for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme.

As part of the proposed partnership, the two companies will explore the establishment of a dedicated Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India, envisioned as a centre of excellence for advanced power and propulsion technologies.

The proposed collaboration brings together Rolls-Royce’s expertise in advanced aerospace propulsion with Reliance’s industrial, technological, manufacturing and execution capabilities. The partnership is aimed at supporting the development of an indigenous aero-engine ecosystem and advancing India’s ambition to achieve greater self-reliance in critical defence technologies.

Building an end-to-end propulsion ecosystem

The proposed Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex is expected to develop sovereign, end-to-end capabilities spanning engine design, development, manufacturing, testing, production and through-life support.

The initiative could also create opportunities for wider collaboration in defence and civil aerospace, as well as emerging power and propulsion technologies.

Commenting on the partnership, Anant Ambani, Executive Director, Reliance Industries Limited, said that strategic autonomy requires sovereign capabilities in critical technologies. He noted that the proposed partnership would combine Rolls-Royce’s expertise in advanced propulsion with Reliance’s technology, manufacturing scale and execution capabilities to establish an indigenous aero-engine ecosystem in India.

Tufan Erginbilgiç, CEO, Rolls-Royce plc, said the partnership would bring together Rolls-Royce’s heritage in advanced engineering and engine expertise with Reliance’s industrial capabilities in India. He described the proposed collaboration as a significant step towards building a robust and self-reliant aerospace ecosystem in the country.

Supporting India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision

The proposed partnership aligns with India’s broader ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative and the government’s focus on indigenising critical defence technologies. A locally developed and manufactured combat engine would represent a significant advancement in India’s aerospace and defence manufacturing capabilities.

Beyond the AMCA programme, the proposed collaboration could contribute to the development of a broader domestic ecosystem for advanced propulsion, potentially strengthening Indian capabilities across design, engineering, manufacturing and lifecycle support.

The initiative is positioned as a step towards establishing India as a global hub for advanced aerospace propulsion technologies while supporting the country’s long-term objective of achieving greater technological sovereignty in defence.
